Born in Trento in 1979, Matteo Franceschini studied composition with Alessandro Solbiati at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan.
He graduated at Santa Cecilia National Academy in Rome under the guidance of Azio Corghi and attended the Cursus Annuel de Composition et d'Informatique Musicale offered by the IRCAM in Paris.
He has received several prizes as well as commissions from Filarmonica della Scala, Venice Biennial, Festival Milano Musica, Philharmonic Academy of Rome, Festival MiTo, Orchestre National d'Ils de France, French Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Environmental Conservation (Commande d'Etat) and from other important festivals and organizations.
His works have been performed in various international festivals, among others Venice Biennial, Settembre Musica in Turin, Milano Musica, Società del Quartetto of Milan, Unione Musicale, Rondò, Festival Agora, Festival Radio France, IRCAM, Festival Archipel of Geneva, Zukunftsmusik Festival of Stuttgart, Operadhoy Festival of Madrid, Nederlandse Muziekdagen, Prague Premieres, Munchner Opernfestspiele, Lockenhaus Kammermusikfest and Harvard University. He has had broadcasts on several international radios.
He has realized operas, soundtracks for movies as well as multimedia installations.
He has held lectures at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, at IRCAM, at IULM University of Milan, at Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and at the Conservatories of both Milan and Rome.
He has been named composer-in-residence at the Orchestre National d'Ile de France and at the Philharmonic Academy of Rome for the seasons 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.

His music has been published by Suvini Zerboni - Sugarmusic of Milan until 2010. Since January 2011 he is published by Casa Ricordi - Universal Music Publishing.
